Sharing with the World

This is all very well and will allow you to share your messages inside your own network, but what if you want to share them with the world? This is accomplished by opening up a connection through your home modem/switch, so that the Gadgeteer mainboard is available as a web server to the rest of the world.

This has security implications for your home network, so do this only if you know what you are doing and are willing to take the risk.

There are various ways of doing this, but the safest is probably to go to your home network’s administration console and on the Virtual Server section of the administration console, look for a port forwarding option. Use it to enable port forwarding on port 80 for the Gadgeteer Mainboard’s internal IP address (something like 192.168.1.112).

To access the sketch from outside, you will need to use the external IP address of your home network. You will usually find this on the main status page of your administration console. But beware, because unless your Internet Service Provider provides a static IP address, this may change every time you restart your router.

Enter the external IP address with “/sketch” on the end and you should see the same image as you do from inside the network.
