Hoekstra and Chapagain (2007) makes a distinction between volume of water used from domestic
water resources and water used in other countries to produce imported and consumed goods and
service. The water footprint of an organization is the total volume of fresh water consumed or
polluted directly or indirectly to run and support the business which is expressed in water volume
per unit of time. The business water footprint consists of two components: the operational water
