Among the most common facial recognition techniques is the one that goes under the name of Eigenfaces; this name, as we shall see, derives from the procedures used for its implementation, which make use of linear algebra.
In technical terms, facial recognition is a problem for classification, and consists of combining the names of the faces with the images that correspond to them.
We must not confuse facial recognition with facial detection, which is the set of procedures aimed at identifying the presence of a face within an image. Being a classification problem, facial recognition presupposes the existence of an archive of images representative of faces, to which we must match a name.
