Passive sniffing does not require much intervention. It allows a penetration tester to monitor and capture network traffic without having to initiate any attack to redirect the user's traffic. In passive sniffing, the penetration tester would establish a connection to a hub on the network, as hub broadcasts the incoming signals out to the all other ports.
The following diagram shows an example of passive sniffing where an attack is connected to a hub on a network segment and a copy of all traffic passing along the line is sent to their machine:
