The Windows registry
The Windows registries store all the system's configurations and records – all the actions from the time a system has booted until it is turned off. The registry, better known as hives, maintains its records with the use of registry keys. A hive is a logical group of keys, subkeys, and values in the registry that has a set of supporting files containing backups of its data. The registry is a hierarchical database that contains data critical to the operation of Windows and the applications and services that run on Windows.
