In regions o f the image where the signal variance var(x) is small compared to
the overall variance (homogeneous regions), i.e., ˆx ≈ ¯g, the pixels intensity
is replaced by the window avera ge. On the other hand, when the true signal
intensity is varying strongly, var(x) ≈ var(g), then ˆx ≈ g and no filtering
takes place at all.
