The most apparent feature of the high-level design is its focus on the system structure on the level of the subsystems and the interfaces between them. If the product has to interact with external systems, the interface and protocol of such interactions are part of the high-level design, too. The architecture is identified and validated as being able to support the design, too.
In the case of a typical mid-size software system, the high-level design can be expressed in the list of packages and their public interfaces. If the system has a graphic user interface, its prototype and wireframes are usually enough.
