Quando começas a programar, ouves algumas palavras vezes sem conta, mas não tens a certeza se têm um significado técnico específico ou se são apenas conversa fiada. Os termos ficheiro e diretório são palavras desse tipo, e têm realmente significados técnicos. Um ficheiro é uma sequência de bytes, armazenada num sistema de ficheiros e acedida por um nome de ficheiro.Um diretório é uma coleção de ficheiros e, possivelmente, de outros diretórios.O termo pasta é um sinónimo de diretório. Surgiu quando os computadores ganharam interfaces gráficas de utilizador e imitaram conceitos de escritório para tornar as coisas mais familiares.
Muitos sistemas de ficheiros são hierárquicos e são muitas vezes referidos como sendo uma árvore. Os escritórios reais não tendem a ter árvores e a analogia da pasta só funciona se visualizares as subpastas até ao fim.
