Cardboard boats don't always float.

At 10 a.m. on a Homecoming weekend in a small Michigan college town, scores of students in boats made of cardboard and duct tape paddled down a local pond—and occasionally sank.

At 2 p.m., not far from the water, a kind-eyed, bearded mechanic at a small muffler shop worked on repairing his own car—hours after hitting a deer on the highway.

At 5 p.m., just a short drive from the shop, harried employees at a packed restaurant expertly aligned cheese, dough, and sauce, at times topped with pepperoni—cranking out an endless supply of pizzas to hungry customers.
