The million-dollar story began with a one-sentence tip.

Early last year, while working as an enterprise reporter for The Daily Kent Stater at Ohio's Kent State University, Doug Brown investigated the past legal troubles of Jason Cope.

At the time, Cope, a Kent State alumnus, was preparing to donate $1 million to the university athletics program. In return, school officials were planning to name the campus basketball court after him. Brown initially leapt into the story after the Kent Stater's web editor received an email from a stranger with a single tip: “Google Jason Cope v SEC.”
