19Defining Your North Star: Values and Strengths
Strategy isn't only about looking ahead; it also requires being anchored in the present. At the heart of strategic clarity is a deep understanding of who you are today, what matters most to you, and how you show up when you're at your best.
In fast‐moving environments, it's easy to fall into autopilot, making decisions based on urgency, pressure, or habit. But values and strengths are what keep us grounded. They act as an internal compass, guiding us through complexity, helping us prioritize with intention, and reminding us of our unique contribution.
In the North Star framework, values and strengths represent the present moment. Here belief meets behavior and identity meets action.
Values: Living What Matters Most
Values are often misunderstood in organizations. We've been trained to see them as single‐word virtues—integrity, respect, innovation—posted on office walls or corporate websites. Over time, many employees stop seeing them as real. The words sound nice, but they rarely feel personal, alive, or actionable.
That's the problem. When values become performance language or branding slogans, they lose their power. But when approached authentically, values are anything but fluff. They are the deepest articulation of what truly matters, what you're willing to protect, stand for, and act on, especially when it's hard.
