34The Empowering Leader: Coaching and Mentoring as a Leadership Practice
In today's world of leadership, empowerment is one of the most misunderstood ideas. Often conflated with delegation or micromanagement avoidance, it's far deeper and more intentional than that. Empowerment is not about letting go of responsibility; it's about building the capacity of others to take it on. Within the 6Es of Leadership framework, the Empowering pillar is where leaders shape individual growth. It is distinct from Executing (Leader as an Operator), which focuses on driving team‐level performance through habits, discipline, and shared rituals. Empowering, in contrast, is about one‐on‐one growth. It is the space where leaders show up not just as managers or drivers of results but as coaches and mentors.
The two roles, coach and mentor, are among the most powerful tools leaders can develop. Yet they are often misunderstood, even by seasoned professionals. Too often, they are treated as either synonymous or as incompatible opposites. In reality, they are distinct but complementary, and the best leaders know how to use both, sometimes even in the same conversation.
