Chapter 15

Electrochemical Performance of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Changhe Cao, Xiangyun Yuan, Yuping Wu, and Teunis van Ree

At present, there are mainly two kinds of lithium-ion batteries, which are based on liquid electrolytes and gel polymer electrolytes. The first is called a lithium-ion battery, and the second, a polymer lithium-ion battery. There are also some recent reports on solid-state lithium-ion batteries, which will be covered in this chapter.

As mentioned in previous chapters, lithium-ion batteries should not be overdischarged or overcharged, because both would lead to destruction of the battery (Figure 15.1); this is the main reason why a good protection circuit is needed, especially during the charging process.
