At this point it might be appropriate to introduce one of our favourite case histories, the purpose of which is twofold: first, to indicate the difference between truly strategic and non-strategic purchases; and second, to show how it is possible to make non-strategic purposes more valuable to customers. Figure 9.4 shows the breakdown of purchases by category of a major aerospace company, recently used in my 2016 book Marketing Planning.2
