Looking back at the APDS-9960 diode output for a right-to-left gesture swipe (which we have seen previously in this chapter in the Analyzing gesture data section), it might make you wonder how on Earth we are going to detect a gesture. If you look at the leading edge, the opposite direction of the gesture's photodiode has a higher signal for a while but as the gesture progresses, the signal flops and, by the end, the direction of the gesture has a higher signal. If you look around on the internet, there are several different integration methods that are used to detect the leading edge, the trailing edge, and many others. We just want something simple.
