A database is a collection of tables and related objects that help protect and organize data. It must exist before you can create all database objects, including tables, indexes, and stored procedures. This chapter focuses on how to create a sound database that can house database objects and how to manage the database after the objects are created. The creation and management of the various database objects is discussed in the remaining chapters in Part IV, “Database Administration.”
