Using the new functionality in SQL Server 2008, applications built and running on varying software platforms can now communicate with SQL Server with little or no dependence on expensive, proprietary middleware. And they can do so with minimal client configuration. In providing custom HTTP endpoint support, SQL Server 2008 is also pushing the bounds of what it means to be a traditional database server.
