One of the questions we hear most often is, “How do we decide what to automate?” Our preferred model is the pyramid, although other models, such as the agile testing quadrants, can help as well. In the past few years, practitioners have adapted Mike Cohn’s test automation pyramid that we presented in Agile Testing. We’ve seen some useful extensions, but the basic ideas behind the model stay the same. In this chapter, we’ll explore the potential benefits of the newer interpretations.
