These words, attributed to Jan L.A. van de Snepscheut, computer scientist and author, ring true to broadcast engineers who make a living from implementing practical applications in real world operating environments using equipment designed"in theory" to do the job.

In this completely revised and substantially updated 10th edition of the NAB Engineering Handbook, we have used the phrase"what the engineer needs to know to do the job" as a motto for the authors when writing or revising a particular chapter.
