and Effects palette (it’s the second from the left). Elements presents all the pos-
sible themes for your particular Photo Creation. Double-click a thumbnail and
then drag the new theme to your photo, or click the thumbnail once and then
click Apply. Presto—you’ve got your existing layout with new frames and back-
ground.
• Edit the Layer style of a Frame. In the Layers palette, most of the frames have a
Layer style icon. Double-click the icon to edit things like the size of the drop
shadow on the frame. (See page 360 for more about editing Layer styles.)

Smart Objects
Smart Objects are one of the ways Adobe made Elements
5 projects so fun and easy. Like their big-shot cousins in
the full version of Photoshop, these objects seem to know
where they are and what you’re trying to do—and behave
accordingly. Here are some of the things that make Smart
Objects so smart:
• When you apply a new background from the Art-
work and Effects palette, it immediately zooms
down to the bottom of the layer stack to replace
the existing background, without any assistance
from you.
• Similarly, the frames in the Artwork section of the
palette automatically target your photos. (This
