Making Your Colors

NOTE If you’ve used Curves add-ons in an older version of Elements (like those from Richard
Lynch or Grant Dixon, for example), the new Color Curves tool may take some getting used to.
(You power user, you!) Unfortunately, those add-ons no longer work in Elements 5. If you want to
make the more elaborate adjustments you got from your old add-ons, your only option is to hang
on to your copy of Elements 2 or 3 and use it to create Curves Adjustment layers.
Once you’ve got some Color Curves experience under your belt, you probably
won’t be satisfied with the results you get from the presets. So don’t hesitate to use
the sliders under Advanced Options to adjust different tonal regions in your
photo:
• Adjust Highlights. Move the slider to the left to darken the highlights in your
photo; move it to the right to lighten them.
• Midtone Brightness. If you’d like the middle range of colors to be darker, move
this slider to the left. Move it to the right to make the midtones brighter.
• Midtone Contrast. This slider works just like the one in the Shadows/High-
lights feature (see page 178). Move it to the right to increase the contrast in your
photo, and to the left to reduce the contrast.
• Adjust Shadows. If you want to lighten shadows, move the slider to the right.
