6 DEMILITARISED ZONES AND PROTECTING COMMERCIAL INTERESTS
In this chapter I will look in more detail at the demilitarised zone concept in PDMv3. I will explore how to define it and its relationship to other PDMv3 tools, techniques and artefacts. This chapter will also look at the perverse incentives to fail that are inadvertently written into fixed-price contracts. It will show how to avoid them while still being fair to both sides of the contract.

The DMZ is one of the most important concepts in PDMv3. It is one of the two activities that will be referred to consistently throughout the book by its acronym DMZ because, just like DQR it runs through everything else.
