The field of Organization Development (OD) stands at a pivotal juncture, with advances in technology offering unprecedented opportunities and presenting formidable challenges. The prospects for the future remind us of the famous opening sentence of The Tale of Two Cities: “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” As we look to the future, OD practitioners must navigate a complex landscape where artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and human-centered design intersect. The future will be a time when it is more important to move away from a single-minded focus on organizationally centered (micro) change efforts to a time to consider external (macro) social change (Rothwell et al. 2024). OD practitioners must also facilitate efforts to address crises stemming from Black Swan events and Grey Rhino events (discussed below). This Afterword briefly explores the evolving role of OD, emphasizing the need for balance between technological innovation and the preservation of human values and authentic interpersonal interactions within organizations.
