This chapter looks at two interrelated topics: Big Data and artificial intelligence (AI). We explore the characteristics of Big Data and then look at how it is stored and used. A new concept, the data lake, is introduced. We also examine AI and the closely related concept of machine learning. We conclude by posing some of the ethical issues around the use of Big Data and AI.
