It is not the aim of this chapter to provide the definitive history of military public affairs. It is, however, important to trace the evolution of the profession to understand how the field has grown far beyond media relations into today’s force multiplier and an important management function.
That said, any discussion on military public relations must necessarily start with the military–media relationship.
