As described in Joint Publication 3-61 and throughout the course of this book, public affairs officers (PAOs) carry out many roles in support of coordinated and synchronized communication. In order to do this effectively, PAOs are based or deployed in myriad locations. While all PAOs are likely to carry out the responsibilities of internal communication, external communication, media relations, and community relations, each assignment features a unique balance.
