Summary

In this chapter, you learned some less common but still useful and powerful techniques for using the Linux desktop.

First, you learned a little bit more about the Terminal application and how to use the terminal window to start and manage desktop applications as shell jobs.

You learned about the standard set of X Window System applications, which are present on most Unix desktop systems, whether or not environments like GNOME and KDE are available. They include programs such as xterm, xclock, and xcalc.

Finally, you learned to use the xmessage command and the Nautilus file manager to automate tasks using desktop tools while interacting with the user via the mouse.
