It’s never too early to start your planning and preparation for the endgame. Some activity has to take place early on—for example, setting up your defect-tracking system. Other activities tend to get postponed until after you’ve entered the endgame. A good example of this mistake is deferring the definition of your endgame organization structure and leadership assignments for your development and testing teams.
Of course, most early activity simply consists of planning sessions, which are less of a priority than actually getting the project moving. However, the early planning insures a solid endgame plan and a smooth transition for the team into the endgame.
