CHAPTER 30
Conceptual Illustration
Storyboard artists often serve the role of conceptual artist on projects. Conceptual art illustrates the designer’s vision for the director and producer to agree upon. This may include rendering set ideas, enhancements to locations, character designs, wardrobe, props, and more. On feature films this position is often called production illustrator.
Since a storyboard artist is generally the only crew person specifically hired simply to draw, the job of illustrating ideas naturally falls to him. Once an idea has been agreed upon and approved, the accepted rendering is often used to design and build the final product.
