Chapter 9: Quality of Service
The Windows kernel, which can perform routing and packet filtering like a
standalone router, uses this API to support 802.1p, RSVP, and other, non-telephony-
related QoS standards.
Windows RSVP Service
Windows NT Server, Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server, and Windows
Server 2003 can use a service-based RSVP software agent. The RSVP Service allows
the Windows server to become a policy enforcement point, either as a router or as a
softPBX.
Project 9.2. Audit a Networks Capabilities Using pathping
and traceroute
What you need for this project:
Microsoft Windows XP
Linux
LAN
Access to the Internet
Though Linux is far better equipped to do VoIP network building and troubleshoot-
ing, Windows does have a nifty command-line tool that can be used to determine
how well an IP route supports QoS measures. pathping, which ships with Windows
2000 and Windows XP, lets you see how well your Internet provider—or your cor-
porate network—supports 802.1p and RSVP. It also lets you identify hops along the
call path that are having excessive packet loss.
pathping is similar to traceroute. It first displays the IP route along all hops from the
host where it’s running to the host at which it’s targeted. Then, it collects informa-
tion from each hop along the way,
