Two of the most powerful personalities in the dance world came together in the duo of Margot Fontaine and Rudolf Nureyev. Each was already a star and used to hogging the limelight, yet they set out to make the other look brilliant and talented. Each entirely depended on the other for their success and in doing so strengthened their impact beyond anything they could have achieved individually.
The Fontaine–Nureyev on stage romance represented a generosity of heart. Both gave themselves up fully to the other, until they were working in such harmony that even their separate gestures and movements aligned without conscious effort. They had become entirely interdependent.
