As discussed in the first chapter, Big Data is not a standalone concept. Rather, it consists of skills, technologies and procedures to extract value from massive quantities of data. First, this means that the data needs to be generated somewhere, either by people or machines. Since sensors provide the means to generate consistent and massive data, there is a strong correlation between the increasing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and the ever-increasing size of data. It is estimated that in 2018, there were 22 billion IoT devices connected to the internet. And this number is expected to increase further towards around 50 billion by 2030.1
