Diameter is a peer-to-peer protocol, since any Diameter node can initiate a request. Diameter has three different types of network nodes: clients, servers and agents. Clients are generally the edge devices of a network that perform access control. A Diameter agent provides either relay, proxy, redirect or translation services. A Diameter server handles the AAA requests for a particular domain, or realm. Diameter messages are routed according to the Network Access Identifier (NAI) [RFC2486] of a particular user.
