Biometric Systems
Traditional techniques used to establish the identity of a person are based on sur-
rogate representations of his/her identity, such as passwords, keys, tokens, and
identity cards. In contrast, biometric recognition systems are based on physiolog-
ical or behavioral characteristics of the individual that are unequivocally related to
the owner, cannot be shared or misplaced, and are difficult to steal. Systems based
on physiological traits perform and analyze measurements of a part of the human
body, whereas those based on behavioral traits evaluate actions.
