Chapter 18. Major Standards Activities
In this chapter, we discuss a number of the high-visibility standards activities relevant to PKI concepts or techniques. It is not meant to be exhaustive, but it does include many groups that have captured significant attention in recent times as awareness of security (and especially PKI) has grown.
The groups listed here are interrelated to various degrees. Those defining certificate formats include X.509, SPKI, OpenPGP, EDIFACT, and SSTC; these to a large extent are independent efforts. Those profiling certificates (primarily X.509v3 certificates) for specific environments and uses include PKIX, TC68, S/MIME, IPsec, TLS, WAP, XMLdsig, XMLenc, and SOAP; these efforts overlap to a much greater degree.
