Interface to the Virtual World — Input
Our definition of virtual reality allows for many possibilities by which a user might interact with a virtual environment. These categories of interaction, although implemented in widely different ways and perceived by different senses, still incorporate most of the basic features of VR: immersion, interaction, collaboration, and flexible narrative.
This chapter enumerates many types of physical VR interfaces that have been utilized to date. We will discuss the components and interface issues associated with each area, as well as the hardware and properties of each modality (hearing, seeing, feeling, etc.).
