Quick Detour: Advice
Most Advice Is Bad Advice
Before we look at examples of designing things, a note about advice from the internet. There will always be way more people with Level 1 experience than people with a lot of experience. Why? Probability! Everybody with Level 50 experience also has Level 1 experience! Many people get a few levels of experience and then become project managers or professional cuddlers or whatever and never make it to Level 50. Probably because they were guessing, rather than designing, and got discouraged when nothing worked.
My point is...professional cuddling is a viable career move from here! No, wait, that wasn’t my point. My point is: most of the people offering UX advice on the internet actually don’t know a lot. Ignore them. (Some do! Follow them!) Most are explaining what they just learned. Or they believe that UX is just some UI tips and tricks to follow forever. They only believe that because they haven’t measured any of those “rules,” or haven’t seen when they fail.
Before you decide to follow design advice from the internet, ask yourself if you’re willing to risk your job on their level of experience, which is probably not much higher than yours.
OK, on with the show!
