Understanding Basic Notifications
Before we begin our explanation of basic notifications, we must first define what a notification is. A notification is data delivered to a client, whose delivery is initiated by a server.

There are many common terms used to describe notifications, such as asynchronous message delivery, content push, push messaging, or mobile and active channels. Whatever terminology you are familiar with, the concepts in this chapter will be the same.
