For much of the so-called ‘Golden Age of Hollywood’ from the 1920s to 1960s, making films in Hollywood was dominated by the studio model. This saw a small number of powerful movie studios dominate the production and distribution of films. These films were produced on the studio’s own filmmaking lots, with actors, actresses, directors and other members of the crew all signed on long-term contracts to work exclusively with one studio. They were all effectively studio employees. This system also saw studio control over distribution and exhibition of their films, which resulted in manipulation to boost additional sales through techniques like block booking.
