Chapter 10

Publishing Your App to the Android Market

In This Chapter

  • Building an Android Package File (APK)
  • Creating your Android Market account
  • Publishing your application

The Android Market is the official application distribution mechanism behind Android. Publishing your application to the market enables your application to be downloaded, installed, and enjoyed by millions of users across the world. Users can also rate and leave comments on your application, which helps you identify possible use trends as well as any problematic areas users might be encountering.

You had a great idea and you developed the next best application/game for the Android platform; now you're ready to get the application into the hands of end users. First, you need to package your application so that it can be placed on end users' devices. Android packages are known as APK files; in this chapter, I guide you through the creation of your first APK file.

After you obtain an APK file, I walk you through the process of creating an Android Market account and publishing a free application. I also show you how you can sell your application on the Android Market, so you can finally make that first million you've been telling everyone about!
