Transformers and Power Supplies

TRANSFORMERS

Voltage dividers are networks that can reduce voltages and signal levels, but they they do it by wasting a high percentage of the power, and they can not multiply voltages. Transformers are among the most efficient devices, and can divide and multiply voltage, current, and impedance. Only the small inefficiency factor of the transformer is wasted in heat, second only to the losses occasioned by speaker line, crossover network, and voice coil resistances.

As demonstrated by the Constant Voltage Line transformer shown in

Fig. 3.3, and shown again in more detail in Fig. 11.1, audio signals and AC power are made of the same stuff.
