5 JOB FAMILIES

Roles in tech can be categorised into related roles, sometimes known as job families.

Many organisations define job families, job descriptions and frameworks to provide a structure to the roles available within the organisation, and to apply consistent language and definitions. The UK Government Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework ⁶ defines seven categories of role. Within each category are multiple roles, and each role has multiple levels (e.g. junior/senior/lead/manager); see Table 5.1.
