A subdivision surface is the combination of a control mesh, vertex offsets if edited,
and crease tags assigned to vertices and/or edges.

COMPONENTS
A polygonal mesh doesn't have a hierarchy of levels or edits and thus its vertices
are stored as a 1D array of positions. The faces and edge lists are also 1D arrays.
Referencing a component of a polygonal mesh therefore requires a single value that
