teve Spatucci is an illustrator living in New Jersey.
He graduated from the College of New Jersey with
a degree in graphic design with an illustration
specialization. In addition to illustration, Spatucci works
as a designer, an animator, and a game developer,
specializing in Adobe Flash. His clients include USA Today,
Lockheed Martin, Philadelphia Weekly, Lapidary Journal,
and the National Wildlife Federation. He plays drums in the
Philadelphia band Restraining Order, enjoys screenwriting,
and is married to the world’s finest pastry chef.

Creative Process
Since this piece was illustrated for a self-promotional
postcard mailing, I decided to play to my strengths
and fill it with as many strange monsters as possible.
I worked up several thumbnails first, to give myself
a few options on the image’s composition. Once I
selected a layout, I enlarged it onto 11” x 17” (27.9 x
43.2 cm) paper using a photocopier. I then laid an-
other piece of 11” x 17” (27.9 x 43.2 cm) paper atop the
photocopy and, using a light table, sketched out the
full illustration, fleshing out details in the characters
and background.
Once the sketch was complete, I began inking the
line work directly onto the sketch using a brush-tip
black marker. This gives a varying quality to the line,
which I prefer over a clean, uniform line. After a few
hours of drying time, pencil lines were erased, and the
line work was photocopied. This is necessary because
the ink from the brush-tip markers is water-soluble,
and would bleed if the colored markers were applied
directly to it.
I used Prismacolor markers to apply color to the
clean photocopy of the line work, building up hue and
tone through a number of passes over each shape. The
final colored piece was scanned into Photoshop, where
corrections to the line or color were made. I make an
effort to retain a degree of liveliness in the line and
color, and avoid correcting the piece to the point where
it might be overly “perfect.”

This illustration [at right] was created as the cover
for The Short Rains, an album for my band at the time,
cuppa joe. The album was moody and introspective,
so the band wanted a simple image that conveyed
intimacy. I sketched out this idea quickly, then inked it
and colored the line work, and finally scanned it in and
mocked up the album cover—something I would not
have done had I not been 33.3 percent of the client.
The other two members of the band were very
pleased with the resulting image, and I composed
supplemental images in the same style for the other
elements in the album’s packaging.
