
This philosophy was applied to Red Tide, the style of which may be
defined as realistic, almost photographic, using no feathering technique,
and deeply exploiting the dramatic quality of chiaroscuro lighting for
its character. Although much of my work embraces dark settings and
sometimes darker motifs, I felt this specific subject necessitated a style so
tightly tailored to its content that one should not only be dependent upon
the other to elicit an emotional response from the reader, but would
also have a unity so monolithic that it would be difficult to tell where one
began and the other ended—a complete fusion of style and content.
