288 DB2 UDB V8 and WebSphere V5 Performance Tuning and Operations Guide
8.1 WebSphere data sources
In previous chapters, we have discussed WebSphere data sources. In this
section, we provide more detailed information on two important WebSphere
components in data source, connection pooling and statement cache, which
have an critical impact on performance of a WebSphere Application Server and
DB2 UDB system.
8.1.1 Connection pooling
Each time an application attempts to access a database, it must first connect to
that database, before it can issue queries against it. A database connection
incurs overhead, as it requires resources to create the connection, maintain it,
and then release it when it is no longer required.
