DESIGN LADDER Four stages of design maturity
Stage 1: No design
Design plays a minimal role (if at all) in product or service development. For instance, either product or service development is undertaken by personnel who are not design professionals (this is often called ‘silent design’, which we will touch upon later). The needs of the end users are not fully or meaningfully considered at this stage of design activity.
Stage 2: Design as styling
This is where design is frequently used as a late-stage styling activity, where its relevance is low. In essence, it is used heavily in a reactive manner, and as such its influence and overall value contribution are somewhat limited to and within the organization.
