In 1965, Michael Farr portentously asks the question, ‘Design management, why is it needed now?’, arguably offering the first formal definition of design management as a critical business imperative (Farr, 1965). Since then, design management has been on a steadfast journey of continual development and refinement, weaving between the two interrelated domains of design theory and practice. Design management is still in its infancy as a conscious area of activity, and it is both timely and critically important that we again urgently ask the question that Farr raised over 50 years ago.
