Process Description

InterPhase 5 is a design methodology that divides the process of user interface design into five phases:

  1. Investigation
  2. Analysis
  3. Conceptual Model Design
  4. Detail Design
  5. Implementation and Evaluation

Phases. Each phase is discussed in detail in this chapter. For each phase, we provide a table that describes the steps, sub-steps, tools, and techniques for that phase.

Steps and sub-steps. Each phase is broken into steps. Some steps have sub-steps. For example, in the second phase—analysis—the fourth step is Develop current task analysis. Its sub-steps are Document the task list and Analyze the current workflow.

Tools. Most steps and sub-steps have one or more tools that are produced during that step or sub-step. For example, the fourth step mentioned in the preceding paragraph (Develop current task analysis), results in the production of two tools: the Current task list and the Current workflow diagram. Tools are listed in the table for each phase, and described in the text for each phase.

Techniques. Techniques refer to possible ways that you can create the tools. For example, to document the task list, possible techniques include conducting a contextual study, collecting artifacts or conducting interviews. These techniques are also discussed in this chapter. You may want to use other techniques not discussed. We do not recommended specific techniques for all steps and sub-steps.

Deliverables. Each phase results in a deliverable that summarizes the work done for ...
