The camera and microphone are the eyes and ears of your documentary, so your best work will come from understanding their working principles and techniques. Most of the basic knowledge is commonsense and not overwhelmingly technical. For detailed, well-written descriptions and up-to-date reviews of particular production and postproduction equipment, try either PC Magazine (PCMag.com) or the amazing New York equipment house B & H (bhphotovideo.com). Whatever equipment you use, you must ascertain what encoding formats to use so that your shooting can pass from camera to editing equipment, then onward to the chosen release medium. This is called workflow.
